Rob Reiner's children are mourning the deaths of their parents.

In their first public statement since the shocking deaths of the *Princess Bride* director and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, two of the couple's children — Jake Reiner, 34, and Romy Reiner, 28 — expressed their grief at the sudden loss of the filmmaking duo.

"Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day," the siblings said in a statement to PEOPLE. "The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends."

Jake and Romy went on to share their appreciation for the goodwill they've been sent this week.

"We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life," they said, urging the public to maintain empathy as the situation unfolds. "We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave."

The family previously confirmed the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner on Sunday. The couple were victims of an apparent double homicide. *The New York Times* reported that Romy discovered her father's body upon entering their Brentwood home on Sunday, and that her roommate, who accompanied her to the couple's house, called 911. Authorities then discovered Michele's body.

Hours later, the couple's middle child, 32-year-old Nick Reiner, was arrested in the Exposition Park area in Los Angeles, in connection with his parents' death. On Tuesday, he was formally charged with two counts of murder with the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders. He also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife. His arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 7.

The couple was previously remembered by Rob Reiner's adopted daughter, Tracy Reiner, whom he shared with his ex-wife Penny Marshall. "I came from the greatest family ever," she told NBC News on Sunday. "I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock."
