Nathan Fillion tells PEOPLE how Jenna Dewan ended up with one of is indulgent purchases amid his fitness journey during an interview for the 2025 Sexiest Man Alive issue

He explains that his The Rookie co-star, who plays his wife on the show, has been getting more use out of the item than he has

The pair have been on-screen lovers since Dewan joined the ABC series, currently heading into its eighth season, at the end of season 3

Jenna Dewan may only play Nathan Fillion's wife on The Rookie, but she still reaps the rewards of their relationship in real life.

While speaking with PEOPLE for the 2025 Sexiest Man Alive issue, The Rookie star, 54, opened up about the ins and outs of his self-care routine. While he is satisfied with his 3-in-1 shampoo and staying in with his cat, Fillion says he’s more bold when it comes to exercise, even if his attempts to branch out don’t always work out.

“I go hiking a lot around my house,” he shares. “I just got a bike — my girlfriend likes to bike. She's really, really good at it. So I got an electric bike so I can keep up with her. And I’ve got a couple of little units in the back of my house to help me exercise, a couple of free weights and a little cable rowing device.”

“I had a Pilates machine that I never once used, so I gave it away to Jenna Dewan, who plays my wife on The Rookie,” he then reveals, noting: “She just texted me today how much she's enjoying it.”

Dewan, 44, has played Bailey Nune, the lover of Fillion’s John Nolan, since she first appeared on the hit police drama at the end of season 3. She was quickly promoted to a series regular and, in season 6, their characters got married.

Fillion — who has been in the role since the show’s debut in 2018 — says he sees many similarities between his personal relationship preferences and those of John and Bailey. When it comes to an ideal date night, the actor enjoys dressing up just “a little bit” while staying comfortable, and then “wrapping it up early.”

“I think John and Bailey would say, probably, the same thing,” he quips. “They probably want to have a little more of an intimate evening with the two of them just so there's no work involved and then wrap it up early. I think that's where they are too.”

Fillion and Dewan, along with the rest of The Rookie cast, are currently gearing up for the premiere of season 8 — which kicks off in a new setting, Prague, Czech Republic — in January. The on-screen couple’s storyline left off with them trying to adopt a child, but their application was denied due to their line of work.

In April, ScreenRant asked creator Alexi Hawley if that chapter of John and Bailey’s lives was coming to a close in the upcoming installation, to which he responded, "I think it has."

"[It’s] the reality of their unique situation,” he continued. “But I think they've come through it and, for now at least, have made their peace with [the fact] that it’s just the two of them.”

The Rookie season 8 premieres on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. All seven seasons of The Rookie are now streaming on Hulu.
